A Neighbourly Approach to Complex Care

Personalized care is embedded in the structural design of this new 56-room complex care home in Salmon Arm, B.C. Upon entering Piccadilly, residents become part of their own neighbourhood, since each wing of this new care home is designed and designated as a separate neighbourhood: Aberdeen, Blackburn, Chickadee, Dogwood,or Enchanted. The 12 to 14 residents in each neighbourhood share a lounge, kitchen, activity and dining area.

This division of residents into smaller neighbourhoods means no one is overlooked. Care is individualized and each person is readily recognized by staff and their neighbours, with whom they share mealtimes and activities. Nutritious meals are cooked on-site and served in the neighbourhood dining room, which serves as a 'family' dining room.

Each resident’s home within the neighbourhood is a furnished room with an electronic bed, overhead lift tracking, dresser, bedside table, armoire and a two-piece bathroom. Residents can personalize their rooms with a favourite piece of furniture or two and with wall photos and other mementos. Each resident is also invited to fill a Memory Box showcase outside their room with items reflecting their family, life events, and personal interests.

Activities Galore and Giving Back to the Community

Piccadilly boasts one of the busiest and most innovative activity calendars among the always busy Park Place care homes. A major activity includes annual walking challenges, which chart a course measured by covering lengths of the corridors. Special meals, contests and treats are integrated with this walking challenge, with the result that residents wholeheartedly participate in regular exercise.

Another innovation is the establishment of a chair hockey league, with hotly contested games between Picadilly and teams from other care homes/assisted living residences in the area.

Residents also seek ways to give back, including participating in the annual Terry Fox Run - although some are in wheelchairs; contributing to the homeless; and crafting a prize-winning quilt for the fall fair, which was raffled as a fundraiser for a local charity.
