Our Residents had a Fun and Festive Canada Day Celebration!
July 14, 2023 | By Park Place Seniors Living |
Canada day is a holiday to celebrate independence and unity. Campbell River always has a day full of activities and fun for everyone to enjoy. This year, our residents had a blast as they took part in many festivities such as the popular Canada Day Rotary Parade, watching the skydiver’s arrival ahead of the annual fireworks show, and enjoying some Canada-themed cupcakes from the Campbell River RCMP.
Every year, Discovery Harbour Seniors Community enters in the themed float contest. This year we are happy to announce that we were awarded first place! The 2023 year’s theme was “Together We Celebrate!” which aimed at highlighting our favourite part of our community. With this idea in mind, we chose to decorate our float with a marine-like theme as it represented the beautiful waters surrounding Campbell river!
The parade is always a great hit with our residents at Discovery Harbour Seniors Community as it gives everyone the opportunity to participate in an activity together both during the creation of the float and through the experience of watching the parade. Our residents got to view many exciting floats and organizations throughout the parade such as the historical vehicles and costumes displayed by The Museum of Campbell River, The 1932 fire truck that city councilors rode on, the all-female Mountie contingent from the Campbell River RCMP detachment, and even an appearance from Chewbacca!
It is important to bring our residents along for community events like Canada Day as it promotes several positive feelings and benefits to them. Being part of a big event like this allows our residents to feel a sense of social connectedness with their peers inside and outside of our seniors community. In addition to this, brainstorming ideas and putting together the float offers mental stimulation and a sense of purpose. Participating in community events enhances the overall quality of life for our residents and it reinforces the importance of being a valued member of their community.
