Celebrating Ordinary Albertans Doing Extraordinary Things: Lieutenant Governor Salma Lakhani’s Visit to Medicine Hat

At Park Place Seniors Living, we believe in celebrating the exceptional individuals who make our communities thrive. On September 15, we had the honor of witnessing a truly remarkable event right here in Medicine Hat, as Alberta’s Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable Salma Lakhani, paid a three-day visit to Medicine Hat. During her stay, she embarked on a journey to discover the heart of the community and to honor those who make it extraordinary. Part of her visit included attendance at a Coronation Tea at Park Place community, The Wellington Retirement Residence.
Honoring King Charles III at the Wellington Retirement Residence
Lieutenant Governor Lakhani’s visit was a special occasion for employees and residents at The Wellington Retirement Residence. The event aimed to honor King Charles III and recognize the invaluable service of several dedicated employees at the Wellington. It’s a testament to the strong sense of community and tradition that exists within our senior living communities here in Medicine Hat. We were pleased to have several other distinguished guests in attendance including Her Worship Mayor Linnsie Clark, Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Justin Wright, Honourable Jim Horsman, Reverend Dr. David Clark, and Dr. Ken Sauer.
Her Honour spoke of her meeting with King Charles III in the week before the coronation at Buckingham Palace. She also spoke of his commitment to developing his relationship with the First Peoples in Canada. Lt. Gov Salma Lakhani also shared her story being forced out of her home country of Uganda and becoming stateless before eventually coming to Canada as a refugee. She encouraged attendees to reflect on their own stories and those of other Canadians.
Recognizing Long Service Employees
At the end of the program, Her Honour presented each of our long service employees at The Wellington with certificates of recognition and commended their extraordinary commitment. These long service employees started their jobs at The Wellington before the global pandemic and continue to serve our residents on the other side.
The Wellington Retirement Residence was the first seniors’ community that Park Place acquired in Alberta. We are proud to continue serving seniors’ in the Medicine Hat area with now three communities offering independent living, supportive living, and long term care options.
