Honouring Heroes Among Us: Celebrating the WWII Veterans of Park Place Seniors Living

At Park Place Seniors Living, we are honoured to be home to a remarkable group of residents who embody courage, resilience, and service. Across our five British Columbia sites, 20 veterans – many of whom served during or shortly after World War II, share a legacy of strength and sacrifice. To commemorate their contributions, Park Place Seniors Living has conducted interviews and gathered photos to preserve their extraordinary stories.

These veterans remind us of the rich histories that walk among us each and every single day. Their lives are a testament to service, endurance, and the hope for a better future. Here, we share a few of their stories to inspire us all.

John Lupse: Navigating the Seas in Service

Born in Romania in 1932, John Lupse’s journey of service began at just 19 years old, when he was drafted into the Romanian Navy. Stationed on the Black Sea, John served aboard a military ship as part of the Commander’s crew.

His role required mastering complex communication techniques, from using flags during the day to lights and Morse code at night. He also trained as a scuba diver and spent two months on a submarine, gaining invaluable skills and memories.

Reflecting on his three-and-a-half years of service, John cherishes the experiences and friendships formed at sea, where discipline and teamwork were essential. His story exemplifies the dedication of young men thrust into challenging circumstances during wartime.

Ron Downes: A Life of Versatile Service

Born and raised in Canada, Ron Downes dedicated eight years of his life to the military, serving in the Army Reserve. His service began with the B.C. Dragoons in Penticton, B.C., where he trained in winter survival and rifle skills.

Ron later joined the 19th Medical Company in Regina, Saskatchewan, where he received military driver training, competed in first aid, and contributed to flood control efforts. Promoted to lieutenant, Ron was responsible for medical stores and other critical duties.

Ron’s diverse skills and adaptability demonstrate the wide-ranging contributions of service members, both in combat training and in vital community support efforts.

Eric Painter: From War-Torn London to the High Seas

Eric George Painter grew up in London, England, during the turbulent years of World War II. Born in 1938, he vividly recalls the aftermath of the war: food shortages, strict rationing, and the lasting fear of bombings.

In 1957, Eric joined the British Navy, serving as a Leading Seaman Sailor First Class until 1996. Often stationed in the Mediterranean, Eric exemplified commitment and resilience, serving his nation for nearly 40 years.

Service runs deep in Eric’s family, with his brother stationed in Burma during World War II. Reflecting on the hardships of post-war life, Eric recalls the sacrifices made by individuals and families alike. His story reminds us of the strength it takes to rebuild and move forward after such devastation.

Derek Toplass: A Legacy of Rebuilding

Born in the United Kingdom, Derek Toplass’s life has been one of service and resilience. Serving in the army during World War II, Derek was stationed in Italy and Germany, assisting with post-war rehabilitation efforts.

After moving to Canada in 1967, Derek pursued further education and became an engineer, contributing to Vancouver’s Expo 86. His early life, marked by the challenges of war, shaped his determination and ability to adapt.

Derek recalls wartime restrictions, where even alarm clocks were repurposed for the war effort. With schools closed, children were taught by housewives, exemplifying the community’s resilience. Derek’s story reminds us of the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.
